1. Arm servos base mount

Welcome to Bowie’s arm! You should probably know ahead of time that, this is one of the trickiest sub-assemblies to assemble. This part will bring you through assembling the servo mounts that attach to the base of the chassis. You will need to repeat some of the steps 2 times for the other side.

*Note: If you plan on driving your Bowie around a lot (who wouldn’t?) we recommend blue thread lock on the fastener threads. It’s possible some pieces may require sanding.

Fasteners required

  • 16x M3 10mm
  • 16x M3 10mm
  • 4x M3 10mm
  • 36x M3 washers
  • 36x M3 hex nuts

If you ever need a to see what you are working on, feel free to go back to the splash page, where there is an interactive 3D model viewer there.

Stack the servo mount on top of the larger servo lift, as pictured above. Use 2 x M3 10mm screws with washers and nuts to fasten them together.

Now, fasten the smaller servo lift to the servo mount with 2 x M3 10mm screws.

Fasten the servo plate to the bottom of the smaller servo lift with 2 x M3 10mm screws, washers and nuts.
*Note: You will need to remove the nuts in a later step, but this will help secure it together for now.

Next, fasten the servo plate to the bottom of the larger servo lift with 2 x M3 10mm screws, washers and nuts.
*Note: You will need to remove the nuts in a later step, but this will help secure it together for now.

Slide the servo motor into the servo mount, paying attention to insert the cable through first and not strain it. Use 2 x M3 10mm screws, washers and nuts to fasten one side of the servo motor into the mount.
Attention: The servo horn should be facing near the front in this orientation

Fasten the other side of the servo motor using 2 x M3 10mm screws, washers and nuts.

Use 4 x M3 10mm screws to fasten the servo end effector to the servo motor.

Now, repeat steps 1-7 for the opposite side of the arm.

Attach the servo mounts together using the servo bar. Make sure to orient the servo bar as shown above.

Get your hot glue gun and plug it in! Take a look at the images in this step and the next. Have the rounded servo enclosure shown below ready at hand. When your glue gun is hot, glue across the purple lines shown above, and place the servo hood on the servo motor mount while the glue is still hot.

Apply pressure to attach the servo hood to the servo motor mount securely.

Again, take a look at the images in this step and the next. Have the top plate shown below ready at hand. Put hot glue along the edges of the servo arms, and quickly place the top plate on the hot glue.

Apply pressure to attach the top plate to the servo arms securely.

Fasten the above plate to the servo end effectors with 4x M3 10mm screws, washers and nuts.
You’ve finished the first stage of the arm that will make it move! Next up we will continue with the other segments of the arm.
