8. Light mounts

To add the LEDs to Bowie, we will need to secure them to some light mounts. In this part we will do so, and also add caps to the light – filling it with hot glue to decrease the liklihood of sand entering. For this part you will need the light mounts and light caps.

Obtain two of the light mounts 3D printed pieces. For the two pieces, the circular extension should be on opposite sides.

Find the two white LEDs (LF and RF). Make sure the LEDs can fit into the circular pieces. Secure their location with tape on the surface below.

Apply hot glue onto the circular piece.

Press the LED into the circular piece. Hold it in place for the hot glue to secure. The wires for the LED should be pointing upwards towards the small opening in the circular piece.

Repeat the same for the second LED.

Here is the LED secured in place with the hot glue.

Obtain two of the light cap pieces. All of these pieces are the same. Apply hot glue to the inner perimeter of the light cap.

Press the light cap into the circular portion of the light mount. The opening should align with where the wires are exiting. The fit should be tight and secure.

Repeat for the second light cap and light mount.

Congratulations! You have completed the enclosure for the two front LEDs.

Now to repeat the process, but for the blue LEDs. Obtain two of the light mounts 3D printed pieces, as well as the light caps. For the two pieces, the circular extension should be on opposite sides.

Secure the blue LEDs to the surface below using tape on their wires.

Apply hot glue onto the circular piece.

Press the LED into the circular piece. Hold it in place for the hot glue to secure. The wires for the LED should be pointing upwards towards the small opening in the circular piece.

Repeat the same for the second LED.

Press the light cap into the circular portion of the light mount. The opening should align with where the wires are exiting. The fit should be tight and secure.

Congratulations! You have completed the enclosure for the two back LEDs.

Here are all four of the LED mounts. These will go onto the base of Bowie.

Apply hot glue to fill in the gap between the light mount and the LED. Try to go around the lens and not apply the hot glue there. Ensure some overlap with the light cap.

Here’s how the lights should look once the hot glue cools.
