1. Introduction

Welcome to the Wheel Kit! This will guide you through the steps for making one of the wheels for your Bowie robot. These steps will need to be repeated for all 4 of the wheels. The wheel consists of a partially sealed motor enclosure, a flexible disk for suspension, the outer wheel, and a JST-SM connector to interface with the Bowie Brain kit. Please note that there is a portion of this that is quite tedious and will require some patience. With that, let’s get started!

Tools required:

  • Soldering iron
  • Solder (your choice – lead free or leaded)
  • Third hand tool
  • Desolder wick braid, or desoldering tool (just in case there are mistakes along the way)
  • Diagonal cutters
  • Painters tape
  • Screwdriver with bit kit
  • Hot glue gun and hot glue stick
  • Heat shrink
  • Blue threadlock

Here are all the components in the Wheel Kit for one of the wheels (yours likely contains 4 of these). Make sure to check the parts that are in your kit to familiarize yourself with them before beginning!

In the above photo, the positive and negative wire were bundled as 1.5m each. In this photo, they are shown as approximately 18cm cuts. Proceed to cut the wire into pieces that are 18cm long. At the end you should have 4 pieces of each colour.

Here is what the final product looks like. This is what we will be making.
